About Mariah

my ocean journey

I am a marine biologist, entrepreneur, adventurer, and photographer seeking science-based solutions to improve ocean and human health.

I was raised in New England, studied marine biology in Florida, then attended graduate school at Moss Landing Marine Labs in California. I was very lucky to find FishWise, a non-profit sustainable seafood consultancy in Santa Cruz, where I spent 10 years working with companies, NGOs and governments to combat illegal fishing, improve seafood traceability, advance social responsibility in supply chains, and improve fishery management around the world.

I am currently on a sabbatical, inspired by a TED talk “The Power of Time Off”. In 2018 I hiked 2,200 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail - stretching border to border through California, Oregon and Washington. In 2019 I completed a continuous footpath along the Appalachian Trail, bringing my lifetime backpacking miles to over 5,000!

In 2019 my sabbatical will continue with more adventures and some time visiting my family. To follow along on the adventure, find me on Instagram (@crewmaya7).

I do plan to return to marine science at the end of my sabbatical and I'll be looking for new opportunities at that time. If you'd like to work together, please get in touch by emailing me at boyle.mariah@gmail.com.
